Okay listen, I’ll be the first to admit that when I’m on vacation and I have a choice between drinks on the beach (or really anywhere) and sitting down to write in my journal, I don’t always choose my journal – read: almost never.
Having said that though, journaling is a great way of remembering your travels and growing as a person! I’ve been on some amazing trips all across the world and being able to look back and revisit not just the places, but my thoughts at that time is always really rewarding! The thing is, these trips and vacations always eventually come to an end but by keeping a travel journal I can read my words and feel those feelings all over again!
Here are my tips for creating a travel journal:
- Keep your plane, train, bus, concert, and museum tickets!
- Collect found objects and imagery – flyers and postcards are great to use for collages
- Record details! Dates, time weather, location, hotel name and room numbers make for great memory joggers
- Write down you itinerary! What restaurants, cafes, or bars did you go to? What local attractions did you visit? Add a starting destination and a final destination to your journal notes if you’re going more than one place!
- Don’t forget the people! Who are you traveling with? What memories do you share now? What did you talk about? Who else did you see and what did you overhear?
- Write what you feel! How does this place make you feel?
- And finally, a travel journal doesn’t have to only be for exotic places – your everyday trips are just as worthy of being recorded!

The next time you find yourself far from home, or just around the corner, don’t forget to gather the details and write them down. Years from now you’ll thank yourself for collecting these memories and I doubt you’ll regret missing out on that drink!
