We’ve all been there: you’re trying to take pictures and get some strange looks or hear someone saying something about you, you start to get anxious and self conscious, and now the last thing you want to do is keep shooting. Yeah, it’s the worst.
When I first started shooting content I was soooo shy and awkward and uncomfortable in front of the camera. I hated the thought of people looking at me and judging me for what I was doing. So, how did i get comfortable posing for photos In public? The more I’ve shot the more comfortable I’ve become and the less I’ve cared about the stares or opinions of strangers!
I’m not gonna lie though, this shoot was difficult for me. I thought I got a lot of stares normally, but that was nothing compared to the looks I got when I put on this dress! Let’s be honest the dress is a bit out there so I GET IT!😂 but at the time that didn’t make me feel any better.
In the end, we got some great content out of it so it was well worth the stares! And I was really proud of myself for going for it and not chickening out!
Here are my top tips for feeling confident when shooting in public:
1. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable – Practice makes perfect! I promise!!
2. Practice your poses in the mirror and figure out what your best angles are! This is key to getting a good picture that you like, because you know what your good side is! Once you have a better idea of what you’re doing its easier to start loosening up and having fun with it! Just remember, you are your biggest critic.
3. Tunnel vision. Period. Trust me, People will look no matter WHAT! – some people will mock you and some will root for you. It will happen whether you’re jumping around, doing a crazy pose, holding a random prop, jumping in the air, dancing in the middle of the the street… or even just walking around scouting locations. People love to stare! But focus on YOU and giving your best. If you want to get a shot then stop worrying about everyone else and.. GO GET IT!
I hope this helps! Save this post so you can come back to it anytime you feel lost or need a little encouragement! And if you need help finding good photo spots near you check out this post here!
