It’s 2019 and in my opinion, its time to get over our thinking that therapy is this taboo subject. People are ashamed to admit that they’re seeking help or looking for some clarity in their life, but it shouldn’t be that way. As someone who’s seen a lot of therapists in my life, I’ll never understand the misconception that therapy is only for people who”need” it. Therapy is one of the best forms of healing and and just about everyone could use a little healing these days.

It’s Not Just For People Who “Need” Therapy
Therapy is NOT just for people suffering from mental illnesses or a life crisis. So many people think their issues are not big enough to warrant therapy but the fact of the matter is, it doesn’t matter how big or small your problems are. Nobody is perfect, and everyone has problems (if not you can have some of mine.) Whether it’s work issues, relationship drama, or full blown anxiety, everyone of us will go through some stress at one point in time. The more informed you are about how you deal with it, the easier it will be for you to handle these stressors whenever they come up.
Getting an Objective Opinion
Talking to a therapist also provides you with an objective opinion. While its true that you could just talk to a family member or friend, many times the people closest to you have a biased opinion which can influence the advice they give you. A therapist on the other hand, is approaching your issues neutrally and is probably one of the only people that can give you an unbiased opinion. They also aren’t going to judge you and everyone deserves a safe space to talk about their lives without fear of judgement.
You’ll Learn A lot About Yourself
Understanding the way you think and react to certain situations can be very helpful. Therapy forces you to think about the reasoning behind your actions. It allows you to become more at peace with who you are and you may be surprised at the things you learn. I’ve learned so much about myself in therapy as well as, how to deal with with stress, anxiety, and anything else that pops up.
Learning how to deal with my problems in a non-destructive way has been a game changer for me. When I’m stressed, I don’t automatically grab a glass of wine (or shut down completely) — instead, I deal with my issues head on. Sure, I might still have that glass of wine, but it’s no longer a coping mechanism for stressful situations.
Strengthening Your Relationships
Better understanding of yourself helps you to better understand your relationships and the way you act in those relationships. When we know how to handle our emotions in healthy ways we know how to respond to other’s better as well. This means we are able to communicate better and as we all know, communication is key!
It’s Pure Unadulterated Me Time
You deserve to take some time for yourself. There, I said it. These days, everyone is busy. We have to balance, work, family, significant others, finances, and so much more on top of our own well being. Therapy allows you to take time out of your busy schedule to focus on yourself for a change. It’s the ultimate form of self care and self care is a really freaking good thing.
