Managing a relationship while building a business is hard. We’ve all heard the saying “your business wont work unless you do” well, the same can be said for a relationship. Add in long hours, tons of stress, possible financial burdens and other issues that come with being an entrepreneur, and even the strongest of relationships can be challenged. Here are 4 tips for managing a relationship while building a business.

Communicate, communicate, communicate!
Communication is key in every relationship but especially for new business owners. Check in with your partner regularly and let them know whats happening in your business. Remember your partner isn’t a mind reader, and neither are you. Let them know how they can support you and make sure to ask them how you can help to make the transition as easy as possible for them.
Take time off
Know when to take a step back from your business. Relationships are complicated and they take a whole lot of time and commitment. Make sure that you don’t just tell your partner that you’re committed, you show them. Make an effort to find time for your significant other. Whether it’s a weekly date night, or just sitting down and eating dinner together, quality time can make all the difference.
Know the difference between work time and quality time
Learn to stay in the moment. If you’re working, then you’re working and you should prioritize the things you need to get done for your business. But when you are with your partner, whether you’re at home in bed or out at a restaurant – be present. This might mean turning off your phone or letting your team know that you won’t be available for the next hour if you can’t separate yourself. There’s no point in taking time off if you’re still going to be working and it isn’t quality time if you are mentally somewhere else.
Have the right partner
Entrepreneurship can be lonely and if your partner is unsupportive it can make you feel even more isolated. Take some time to sit and think over your relationship. Is your partner supportive of your dreams and goals? While every relationship will have their ups and downs, there’s no excuse for a partner to be unsupportive. Starting a business means your relationship is inevitably going to see some changes. Make sure you’re with someone who has your back no matter what and who is willing to stick by you through the inevitable highs and lows that every business owner has.
