Lately I’ve gotten a lot of questions about my Instagram feed and how I get it to look the way it does. Instagram is a very visual platform so it’s important to have a cohesive instagram feed but, actually creating that cohesive feed can seem daunting, I get it. Truth is, theres a lot of things that go into creating a cohesive instagram feed: lighting, editing, presets, etc. It can be a bit overwhelming even for me sometimes! But, with a few quick tweaks you can take your feed from 0-100 real quick! Today, i’m going to share my best tips and tricks for finding your aesthetic and creating a cohesive Instagram feed! Whether you’re starting from scratch or building your existing brand, these tips will help you create a cohesive Instagram feed!
So, here we go! Here are my tips for creating a consistent, on-brand, instagram feed:
Table of Contents
Figure Out Your Theme
Knowing your theme and how you want your feed to look will make the editing process so much easier! The best place to start is to decide on a color scheme/aesthetic!
Choose 2-3 colors that are going to be dominant. For example, I know I want my theme to be bright, and pretty, and airy and i have a pink, blue, and white color theme going on. This is a super important step! It doesn’t matter if you apply the same preset to your pictures, if they have a ton of different colors in them, you’ll have a hard time keeping your photos looking like they go together.
Use Presets
To create a cohesive feed on Instagram, you have to be consistent with the filters you use on your photos. A good preset will help keep your photo editing consistent. The whole purpose of a preset is that the tones, color, lighting, etc. are already set for you. You may have to tweak a color here or there or adjust the lighting from time to time but, in general, all your photos will look like they belong together!
I have about 4 filters on Lightroom that I stick to to keep my feed looking cohesive and this was an absolute game changer for me! You can check out my IGTV on how I edit for more info on this!
Good Lighting is Key
Take all your photos in the same lighting! If you’re shooting with different types of lighting you’ll notice all your photos will look different even if you use the same filters. For instance, if you’ve been shooting in indoor light, you’ll probably notice a yellowish tint. And super bright sunlight can have a harsh effect. Try taking your photos in natural lighting, either in the morning or afternoon, when the sun is up but isn’t at its peak.
Be Picky When Choosing Locations
Another important aspect of creating a cohesive Instagram feed is to carefully choose where you shoot. For instance, if you have a neutral feed and shoot in front of a colorful wall, it’s not going to fit in very well with the rest of your feed. While presets help keep things consistent and give you more freedom in where you can shoot they can only do so much.
Plan Your Content in Advance
My final tip for creating a cohesive Instagram feed is to PLAN IT! If you’re wanting your feed to be cohesive and catalog-esque, you have to plan it as such. I use @plannthat and @UNUM to plan my feed out in advance. I’m able to drop and drag photos around in my grid to see which ones look best next to each other. That way I don’t do two photos with the same pose or colors next to each other!
